Jimmy Buffett is best known for his hits like "Margaritaville" and "Come Monday." He has a devoted base of fans known as the "Parrotheads."
Buffett began playing the guitar while he attended Auburn University and the University of Southern Mississippi. He married his first wife, Margie Washichek, at Spring Hill College in Mobile. After he graduated college he worked as a correspondent for Billboard Magazine in Nashville.
Jimmy Buffett began his unofficial music career as a country artist in the 1960's producing his first album, "Down to Earth," in 1970. He moved to Key West and then began establishing his life as a beach bum as his persona is known. "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" has been labeled as his best, "Havana Daydreamin'" was released in 1976 and "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" which featured the hit "Margaritaville" was released next.
In the 1980's Buffett made more money from his tours than he did his album sales. He was a definite popular concert attraction. During the next 20 years Buffett released a series of albums and also branched in to writing and merchandising. In 1985, he opened his first of the "Margaritaville" restaurants in Key West.
Buffett released two very unusual albums over his career. "Christmas Island" a collection of holiday songs and "Parakeets" a collection of Buffett songs sung by children.
In 1997, Buffett worked with Herman Wouk to create a musical based on Wouk's novel "Don't Stop the Carnival". The soundtrack was released in 1998. In 2003, Buffett did a duet with Alan Jackson "It's Five O'clock Somewhere" which became a number one hit on the country charts. His album, "License to Chill", was released in 2004 and sold 238,600 copies in the first week of the release. With this he topped the US pop albums chart for the first time in his three-decade career.
Jimmy Buffett continues to tour-his concerts sell out in a matter of minutes! He is the co-owner of the "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger In Paradise" restaurants. He also loves baseball and is a part-owner of two minor league teams. Between his restaurants, album sales, and tours he makes an estimated 60-70 million dollars a year.
Buffett is working on developing his own beer, Lone Palm, with Anheuser-Busch (this is a 2006 project).
