Nine Inch Nails was formed in 1988 by Trent Reznor. Trent Reznor has been the only constant member of the band. He is a singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Nine Inch Nails sound is alternative, electronica, heavy metal, rock or industrial rock. "The Perfect Drug" is more drum and bass, "Happiness in Slavery" is industrial metal, "The Frail" is a piano piece, and most of "Pretty Hate Machine" is electronic pop.

Nine Inch Nails has been around for years, but has only produced four full-length albums, "Pretty Hate Machine", "The Downward Spiral", "The Fragile", and "With Teeth". They have also released "Broken" EP. In addition to the official releases NIN has worked on numerous soundtracks and remixes. Each main release serves as a nucleus to satellite releases, including remix albums, singles, and tour documentaries.

"Pretty Hate Machine" went triple platinum in the United States. It was re-released in 12" vinyl, as well as the single "Head Like a Hole".

"Broken" was originally released in a fold-out format which had the first six tracks on a regular CD and the bonus tracks on a three-inch mini-CD. It was later released as one CD when Reznor found out that record stores would take out the mini-CD and try to sell it separately. The song "Wish" won a Grammy in the "metal" category. "The Broken Movie" as of 2005 can only be found on bootleg.

"The Downward Spiral" went quadruple platinum in the United States. "March of the Pigs" and "Closer" were released as singles from the album, and two additional tracks "Hurt" and "Piggy" were sent to radio, but didn't have a single release. NIN made music videos for "March of the Pigs", "Closer", "Eraser", and "Hurt". The MTV version of "Closer" became very popular and just as successful.

"The Fragile" produced three singles. One of the singles, "The Day the World Went Away" was released in the U.S., "We're In This Together" was released in the UK, and "Into the Void" was released in Japan and Australia. The Fragility Tour was released on CD and DVD as "And All that Could Have Been". The special edition contained the "Still" disc which contained songs from NIN's career along with several new songs. There were three videos released on the web site of "Still".

"With Teeth" was collaborated with Foo Fighters Dave Grohl playing drums for many of the songs on the album. The music video for "The Hand that Feeds" was on the web site. NIN allowed the album to be listened to at MySpace before the official release of the album. The vinyl release for Japan, Australia and the UK had an extra track. The official release of the album was on May 3, 2005. Reznor released "The Hand that Feeds" in Garage band format so that his fans could remix it.

NIN performed at the KROQ Acoustic Christmas concert in December 2005. The third single to the "With Teeth" album was released in April of 2006, but won't have a music video release. "With Teeth" went certified platinum in March of 2006.
