Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Rebuilding projects, especially in the Big East, are never the easiest of proposals. So what can Rutgers fans expect in the 2007-08 season? Will it be a continuation of the struggles they saw last year or can this team make some headway towards respectability? The answer, of course, lies in the team make-up and this year, while not having a great deal of depth, Coach Fred Hill does have some talent in his stable.
The two players expected to see a lot of the publicity when it comes to Rutgers Basketball are JR Inman and Anthony Farmer. Farmer is expected to be the starting point guard and does a great job setting his teammates up with good passes. Inman is a legitimate big man who can score and rebound. These two will be joined by Courtney Nelson, Jaron Griffin, and Hamady N'diaye. N’diaye is a shoot-blocker who possesses a lot of athleticism but lacks when it comes to offensive firepower. Fortunately, Inman should be able to shoulder the scoring load in the paint.
Unfortunately, the majority of Rutgers’ talent starts and ends with their starting 5. However, Coach Hill did sign 3 additional guards in the off-season. Two of the guards, Corey Chandler and Mike Coburn, are expected to see the floor as the season progresses. If the Scarlet Knights can overcome their lack of depth on the frontline—mainly by avoiding foul-trouble—they should be able to field a competitive team. Waiting for a team to catch-up when it comes to roster talent is never easy. However, Coach Hill comes to Rutgers with the reputation of being a good recruiter, meaning if he’s given enough time, he can impact the program in a positive manner. Don’t you want to say you were there when the turnaround began?
